In Defense of Liberalism
Why is Liberalism a political death sentence?
Liberals have ceded the high ground the to the "Right", allowing liberalism to be classified as unpatriotic or weak. A reeducation is desperately needed. "Liberalism" is derived from the word liberty, which is the freedom to pursuit one's own happiness without dictates of others, to live and let live, to respect another's opinion. Liberalism is the origin of win-win. A liberal is more likely to admit a mistake, a conservative will tend to stone-wall or pass the buck. Although, there are extremes everywhere, a liberal will listen to and accept advise, a conservative right or wrong, thinks he already knows the answer. Liberals are as brave and sacrificing, at least half of all casualties of war are liberals. History shows, by respecting life, a liberal is less likely to pursue a destructive course.

History has known many notable Liberals, let's examine a few.

President Jimmy Carter, inherited problems with the economy, gas embargoes and government recovering from the Watergate scandals. Because of a charitable act to an old ally, he was confronted with the Iran hostage crisis. However, let us not forget, not one hostage lost their life. Regrettably, those problems over-shadowed his monumental achievement, the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty, an accomplishment not previously achieved, nor since duplicated. Ridiculed in the past, he is now honored world wide for his continued achievements in peace, and as a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

President Bill Clinton, although relentlessly pursued by a vindictive Right Wing faction, as if to say "how dare this Liberal back-country hick beat or favorite man." Despite those attacks, his administration oversaw one of our greatest economic growth periods, leaving our country feeling good again with positive financial prospects.

Another Liberal, John F. Kennedy received flawed intelligence, leading to the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. But unlike the current administration, Kennedy accepted the responsibility for the failure. He wanted us to "ask not, what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" We are losing touch with that honorable goal.

Later during the height of the Cold War Kennedy avoided a possible WW3 by negotiating a peaceful resolution to the Cuban Missile Crisis. With the armed forces on alert and thousands of fingers that could have triggered a nuclear holocaust, Kennedy negotiated a peaceful win-win resolution limiting casualties to one. Today millions are alive because a Liberal President didn't rush off to war.

Even earlier, at the dawn of the Cold War, we recall Harry S. Truman, who integrated the Armed Forces. He went toe to toe with a man who was larger than life, General Douglas MacArthur. During the Korean War, President Truman had to rein in the popular general. The newspaper headlines read "Truman Fires MacArthur." Back then, Truman restored common sense and proved he was in charge, but although he prevented an expanded war and saving millions of lives, that decision cost him his popularity. Today, we also know he was right. President Truman lived up to his motto "The Buck Stops Here" displayed on a desk plaque. When John Kerry is inaugurated, we have an updated plaque for his desk: "The Buck Stops Here Again". Until then, the current administration can use a more fitting plaque: "The Buck Used to Stop Here."

Another memorable Liberal was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. During the great depression he initiated many programs to restore the economy, get people working, helped the needy, improved the infrastructure, this wasn't done with "voodoo economics" but with what we call "bubble up, can-do economics ". He also initiated the Social Security System, which Kerry will strengthen by strengthening the workforce. FDR restored hope with his "All we have to fear is fear itself." speech. Today with our military-might we don't fear much, but we should fear the lack of education, for as we have seen that all our problems stem from ignorance of the truth. We have learned that harm, injury and loss all come from not knowing the truth. The truth will set you free. We need to restore the truth as it relates to reality in our lives.

Seventy years prior to FDR when our nation was facing it's biggest challenge, the Civil War, a Liberal Republican Abraham Lincoln served our country. We know Republicans can also be Liberal. Lincoln pledged that "a nation of the people, by the people and for the people, shall not perish from this earth." Today our two tier society is more a nation "of the powerful, by the powerful, for the powerful". We need to restore the people through education and as stated by Lincoln in his second inaugural address, with "malice toward none" and "charity for all". Let us all unite and restore this nation to its true greatness, a nation that promotes liberty for all its people, and let us by example and not force, spread liberty throughout the world.

We can not end this lesson on our liberal heritage without being reminded of the greatest Liberal of all time. He talked of peace not war, love not hate, compassion not intolerance, all of which we so dearly need today. He said all we need is to have love for God and for our fellow man. Yes, Liberals be proud, we're in the best of company, remember that 2000 years ago Jesus Christ was also a Liberal.
