EducationResolving issues and conflicts can take many forms such as legal, psychological, physical and mortal. The actual outcomes of conflicts, however, have only four: win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose and win-win. The first three are such that there's always a loser, either one side wins and the other loses or both lose. These are results of an adversary form of issue resolution that leaves people embittered and often looking for revenge. These "losers" usually don't forget, they go back and lick their wounds to fight another day. We see these in our homes, streets, business, politics, marriage and war. There are situations where felons are convicted "losers" for committing a crime, but that's the point, their conviction is society's revenge for that crime The history of humanity is a history of such lose-revenge-lose cycles, because in win-lose situations winning is seldom permanent.
The forth method of problem resolution, Win-Win, is one where both parties are satisfied with the resolution and suffer no lasting remorse. This is achievable when both parties are made to understand the other's point of view, find common ground and resolve the issue(s) with give and take to the satisfaction of both. The result is greater understanding, acceptance and a path to building unity.
If win-win is the obvious best choice of problem resolution, why is it seldom achieve? Probably because our heritage of fight-and-flight, winning-is-everything and emotional-capital has created has created a psychology of aggression. Only through education, understanding the ramifications of conflicts can we begin to understand the benefits of win-win.
Abortion Rights
Abortion is a sin in many eyes, one solution would be ban the practice by constitutional amendment or law. This is the same as not allowing people to have tattoos, ears pierced, or color their hear. A ban would force many to break the law and endanger their lives by obtaining abortions by unsafe means. The best way to eliminate abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies. If unwanted pregnancies can be eliminated or greatly reduced, abortion clinics will disappear due to lack of business. Making it more difficult to get an abortion. This reduction is possible through education, teaching abstinence, safe sex practices, and making birth control and plan B readily available. No one wants to be dictated to, especially on personal private matters. The win-win solution is to prevent unwanted pregnancies and thus eliminate abortions. Let's conciliate not dictate, with compassion and education, we will all benefit.
Gay Marriage and Rights
A proposed Amendment to define marriage is not needed because it would open the flood gates for other amendments: an Amendment for affordable health insurance or quality jobs, repeal the Amendments against Unusual, punishment, double jeopardy, self incrimination. We have no right to prevent people from being happy, and feeling secure. We are arguing about the meaning of a word: marriage. When the bottom line is that neither my marriage, nor your marriage, not one marriage is threatened by allowing gays to equally unite, whether it's called marriage or civil union. Likewise children in gay households are not more threatened. Children are far more threatened by abusive parents, under-funded schools, sex and violence in the media, and insufficient child protective services.
Arguing this issue is counter productive and preventing the spread of goodwill that benefits all our lives. When gays feel secure in their lives, we are likewise more secure. We need compassion not confrontation, we need to live and let live. When gays win, we win. Resolving this issue is only a matter of education and appeals to reason. Together we should move ahead and solve more pressing issues.
Health Care
There is a two tier health-care delivery system in this country, and by not having affordable health insurance and timely and quality health care, it's costing our country more in lost productivity, wages, and tax dollars. Without health insurance people put off or don't get regular checkups, don't get medical screening and immunizations. Fortunately most of the forty million uninsured are healthy and don't get sick, but they can suffer from the anxiety of uncertainty. They may worry about, ignore or mistreat minor symptoms that could be resolved with a quick checkup. The result is lost productivity and other stress related problems. For those who do become ill or injured, their care is eventually covered by charity, hospital right-offs and our tax dollars. Making health insurance affordable will eliminate most of these problems. Insure forty million, save forty billion. This is an issue that isn't getting enough attention. We need to, and can fix this problem.
Tort Reform
There is a need for tort reform, but before we allow the injured to lose their rights to just compensation, lets examine the underlying causes to litigation. There are problems with a few of our industries and health providers. Some product and service providers are under such pressure to produce products, solve problems and deliver services that corners are often cut, mistakes are made, or potential problems neglected. In this environment unchecked errors can result in injuries. By improving the product and service delivery process, injuries can be minimized, eliminating the need for tort, and tort reform. Lets not rush to blame the injured, or their defenders until we correct the processes that cause injury.Education is one means of improving product and service delivery. With improved education comes a commitment to truth in design, calculation and reporting; improved quality control, use of technology for information processing, and the ability to detect and report problems. Additionally, there is a need to protect whistle blowers, those who expose potential problems. Another win-win is achieved with eliminating litigation by eliminating injury.
Affirmative Action
Is affirmative action reverse discrimination? Is 30 years of affirmative action enough to neutralize 200 years of slavery, and 100 years of Jim Crow laws? Affirmative action is painful and unjust to some and helpful to others, but again there's an obvious win-win solution As part of an education plan ensure that every qualified student finds a seat in an accredited school and with the improved economy, that there are plenty of quality jobs for everyone. We need a seat for every student. If we can spent $100 billion on Iraq, why can't we find seats for students? Who can argue with that?Crime
Dealing with crime requires acknowledgment of the origins of crime. All too often it's a result of not being gainfully employed, lack of resources, a lack of education, lack of morality and failure of ethics. There are few less depressing emotions then to realize that you haven't been given the opportunity to "be all you could be", or that you can't find a decent job to support your family. Yes a large percentage of our incarcerated come from the under-privilege and undereducated. We have allowed too many to fall through the cracks. Furthermore, once incarcerated we make matters worse by failing to rehabilitate. We can all be born again and learn the right path. Here too there's a win-win outcome, it's never to late to rehabilitate.
Pornography
Pornography is bad enough, but child pornography is a crime and a sin. If there's an Amendment needed, it's one that outlaws any form of child pornography, whether real or imaginary, with severe and permanent punishments. We need to protect our children. Freedom of the press and expression should not include freedom to abuse or use children as sexual objects. We should also push for international laws to protect children and regulate the dissemination of pornography.
Education
Children are often the overlooked constituents. There is a need to fully fund "No Child Left Behind," "Head Start" and Child Care. We often forget in our "gratification now" society, our future security will be in the hands of our young. There is a need to encourage, motivate and educate and reeducate every person to their fullest capability. Bob Keeshan who played Captain Kangaroo to millions, once said "we can solve all our world's problems by taking care of a generation or our children."By envisioning a world in the year 2020, in which there's a large middle class, highly educated, gainfully employed, conserving our natural resources, caring for the elderly and repaying the national debt, that future can only happen if we start today. We need a massive "war on ignorance," to improve our schools, fully fund "No Child Left Behind", "Head Start, remedial education, and an adult reeducation programs, we need to reward teachers so they know they're appreciated and honored. Remember, our growing trillion dollar debt, including the hundreds of billions being spent on Iraq, will have to be repaid by our children. Spending another 25 billion dollars in the next four years on education will insure that our children will be able to afford the repayment. Its never too late to educate.
